I WAS ALWAYS STRUGGLING WITH

Working for an hourly rate.

I worked at an awful job that I hated. I barely earned enough to cover my bills, and when my car broke down, even the bills were put on hold.

I recall an instance at work where, I sat down, the company owner told me, "You should be on your feet." At that moment, I vowed never to work for someone else again and chose to deliver newspapers instead.

Delivering newspapers in the middle of the night, 365 days a year, was not fun at all, but I made more money in half the time. It wasn't the most glorious job, but it prepared me for delivering Amazon packages and, eventually, freight all across the country.

FAST FORWARD A FEW YEARS LATER

I started driving for my first company.

It was an expedited company, and the truck was a 12-footer under 10k GVW. Big Mistake!!! The company had me drive 3,300 miles in 3 days. I was driving 17-24 hours a day in those three days.

I was so tired that I almost drove into a semi-truck doing 70MPH past an on-ramp. I called my wife and told her I would be coming home after the delivery.

I delivered the load in New Jersey and called the company and left on good terms.

I WAS DONE WITH EXPEDITING

So I went on to work for a box truck company.

The company owner had good intentions, but he was booking low-paying loads that were not profitable.It was clear that if he wasn't making money, I wouldn't get paid. I offered to assist him with booking loads, but he declined. After three weeks of not receiving payment, he ended up booking a bad load heading to Idaho.

He had me driving up 9,000 feet in the mountains, in fierce winds and blizzard conditions, at 3 in the morning.

After that awful night and sleeping in an ice-cold truck, I finally reached the receiver and had to wait 5 hours more to unload. I lost it and called the company owner and told him I would leave the load in the parking lot if he didn't pay me. He told me that " he couldn't pay me with money he didn't have." It got really ugly, and he had me deadhead all the way to Ohio.

He knew he couldn't come empty-handed when he went to pick up his truck, so he brought $2,000 of the $4,000 he owed me. I accepted the partial payment but knew I would never see the rest. I told my wife I would never put my life in the hands of others, and I started my own box truck and dispatch business, and the rest, as they say, is history.
